Trivia
Black Cat was the last song recorded for the RHYTHM NATION 1814 album - it was the first time Janet released a song she had written all by herself.
The lead guitar on Black Cat, courtesy of Dave Berry, took a week and a half to record.
The 'in concert' promo for Black Cat, shot at the Met Center in Bloomington, Minneapolis, drew a crowd of 3,000 young fans.
The black cat - a melanistic leopard - was called Rhythm. As well as appearing in the promo video, he contributed to s disastrous opening night on the Rhythm Nation 1814 World Tour. 'The black cat, he peed - on stage!' explained Janet, after she'd slipped and landed on her butt. 'It's funny, I can laugh now, but at the time I was so mad - so upset!'
Black Cat was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Performance, Female, but despite being strong favourite to win, Janet lost out to Alannah Miles.
When she performed Black Cat at the 7th annual MTV Music Video Awards, the audience got more than Janet planned for. 'In the concert, I normally open up my blouse,' an embarrassed Janet explained afterwards, 'but for the MTV Awards we found this really neat top that had snaps instead of buttons. So when I undid it - the whole thing went!'
Black Dog, by Led Zeppelin, is one of Janet's all-time favourite songs. She was introduced to hard rock by sister La Toya, who was a big fan of Led Zeppelin especially when they were growing up.
